TMJ & Orofacial Pain Relief Therapy In St. Peters
Cardinal Physical Medicine and Cardinal Dental are dedicated to helping its patients get relief from a wide range of physical and dental disorders. One of the unique areas that we treat every day is TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction). Our chiropractor, Dr. Richard Blalock, and his wife, our dentist, Dr. Cynthia Blalock are leaders and pioneers in the treatment of this complex pain syndrome. Dr. Richard Blalock has had the honor of teaching continuing education seminars to other dentists, dental hygienists, and chiropractors in and around the St. Louis area. As the only multidisciplinary clinic in the St. Louis area that treats TMJD we are very passionate about the advancement of the treatments for our patients.
TMJD is a broad diagnosis of disorders that includes several factors:
- Restricted range of motion or locking of the jaw
- Painful clicking or popping when opening or closing the mouth
- Pain in the face, neck, or shoulders
- Improper fit between the upper and lower teeth
- Headaches, earaches, dizziness, hearing problems, and/or difficulty swallowing
Chiropractic treatment of TMJD can alleviate symptoms by correcting misalignments in the spine and re-positioning of the jaw. Corrective therapeutic exercises and stretching improve posture and help to improve jaw tracking and movement. If necessary, our medical treatments can provide short-term relief from pain if corrective exercises and stretches cause initial discomfort.
The Journal of Oral Rehabilitation recommends examination of the cervical spine in TMJD patients, even without cervical (neck) complaints. These findings are supported by the Journal of Cranio and Clinical Oral Investigation as well. At Cardinal Physical Medicine we are trained to examine your neck and jaw to determine the best course of co-managed care with your oral health providers. If the need arises, we also have on-site 3D CT imaging of the jaw to help determine a diagnosis.
With proper care and treatment of TMJ and spinal disorders, patients can achieve pain relief and correction. The unique and comprehensive treatments at Cardinal Physical Medicine enable the body to heal naturally and with long-lasting results.
